Schütz and the “Orpheus of Zittau”. Works of Andreas Hammerschmidt and Heinrich Schütz

Saturday, 15.10.2016, 19:00 Uhr | Zeitz, Dom St. Peter und Paul

18 | The Path is Unlocked

That was brave! As Andreas Hammerschmidt sent his Choral Music in the Madrigal Style to Heinrich Schütz, he put all of his eggs in one basket. How would the “Father of German Music”, the well-travelled European, and the unrivaled master of music, react to this music written by a refugee child stranded in Freiburg? That he would eventually be hailed as the “Orpheus of Zittau”, was not yet revealed. Schütz’s answer set the course: “Continue / as you are doing/ the way is already taken // The path is unlocked / You have sighted the objective.“ Schütz had become a benchmark and a guideline, decisively structuring the musical environment of Central Germany. If this year’s Music Festival peers into “far-away lands”, the ensemble contributes polyharmonic music “from nearby”, which at the same time resonates throughout the European art world.
