Antidotum Tarantulae – a meeting of baroque music with traditional music of southern Italy
„The concerts presented by L’Arpeggiata – the hip, international early-music ensemble – are fun happenings full of music flair, dramatic surprises, and improvisatory verve.” (Opera News)
The Austrian lute player and harpist, Christina Pluhar, knows a lot about the musical diversity of the Tarantella. She meticulously compiled the dance’s historical traditions, and their transmission into Neapolitan folk music, and rehearsed the program together with her international top-tier ensemble, taking on the wide range of ritual dance with the openness of a medieval perspective… and thus touching on those traditions in which the Christian festivals still drew on the liberating ambivalence of an enhanced horizon of emotionality; in the Festum Asinorum (Festival of the Donkey), with its hearty and erotic innuendos on the rituals of the Mass, or with the “Easter Laugh” (risus paschalis), which lent the Easter Festival a physical dimension.
“The sublime intricacies of the arrangements of Christina Pluhar, the unforgettable magic of sound, the perfect art of composition, the quality of the musicians, all of this is a piece of extraordinarily good fortune.”
