Music between the worlds – from Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni FeliceSances, Barbara Strozzi, PandolfoMealli and traditional music as well as improvisations on Athanasius Kircher, GirolamoKapsberger, and others
Music of Claudio Monteverdi, 400 years old, but seeming like it’s just been written: lean, transparent, sporty, playful, eccentric – and jazzy. Can one actually speak of “early music”? – Of course, the spirit with which the musicians surrounding Christina Pluhar play is very contemporary. They take all the freedom needed asinstigated by the bold harmonic fusions, the crisp rhythmic formulas, and the timeless melodic lines. The art of improvisation is therefore the driving impulse. No wonder the performances of Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata have been described as baroque jam sessions. And that’s the common element between the 17th and 21st centuries: the possibility, indeed the duty, to be able to freely vary and improvise.
“One has to ask oneself, how one defines ‘crossover’. That is a buzzword that must be carefully used. An example: To date, there are regions in southern Italy where the Tarantella – a typical folk dance – is sung in Greek. On the one hand, the people there are living out their centuries-old Greek roots and traditions. On the other hand, the music has become 100% connected to Italian culture. What a mix of cultures! If that’s what’s meant by ‘crossover’ – well then, there you are, we do that!”
