The incorporated society Mitteldeutsche Barockmusik in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen e.V. (MBM) was founded in 1994 as a so-called “lighthouse project” of the Federal Republic of Germany for the former East German states. The MBM is financed by The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Saxony-Anhalt, and the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture. The non-profit association is located at Kloster Michaelstein (Blankenburg, Harz) with its managing director’s office in Halle (Saale). The society has about 60 members, comprising both natural persons and legal bodies from all over Germany.
The MBM is a funding institution with the specific objective to raise our modern awareness of the extraordinary concentration and diversity as well as the outstanding quality of Central German baroque music in its fundamental significance for European musical culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Every year a great number of projects – concerts and festivals, symposia and conferences, scholarly publications and editions – are supported both conceptually and financially.
In addition, the MBM is a modern network for early music, contributing significantly to invigorating the cultural region of Central Germany in its distinctiveness and singular quality. The institution functions as a forum bringing together professional musicians, scholars and representatives of the leading concert venues, research institutions and museums in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia as well as in Germany at large. Collaborations, synergetic effects and cross-fertilization in close partnerships are means to pool common interests. Further, the MBM serves as a cultural representative and communicator, promoting Central German baroque music as a field of scholarly research, and, more importantly, as a vital aspect of our present-day experience and contemplation.
In its role as concert organizer with a specific focus on Central German baroque music, the MBM strives in an exemplary manner to make the historic music of this region accessible for the general public, turning it into a musical experience for a broad and diverse audience. Every spring the MBM hosts the festival of Central German baroque music unMittel BARock! – Tage Mitteldeutscher Barockmusik, each time choosing a different location, and always in October it brings together the three Central German states in presenting the HEINRICH SCHÜTZ MUSIKFEST.
